Jay & the Americans had four top ten hit records in the 1960's, beginning with "She Cried" in 1962. The original lead singer, John "Jay" Traynor, left the group shortly after this and was replaced by David Blatt, who changed his named to Jay Black.

The group then recorded "Only In America", a Lieber and Stoller composition originally recorded, but not released, by the Drifters. In 1964, "Come A Little Bit Closer," went all the way to number three.

The year 1965 brought "Let's Lock The Door (And Throw Away The Key)", "Some Enchanted Evening," showcasing Jay Black's powerful voice.  Then a song that had been a top ten hit for British singer, David Whitfield in 1954, "Cara Mia" became a huge hit, going all the way to number 4 and staying in the top ten in the summer of 1965 for 11 weeks.

Jay and the Americans was one of the few successful groups to spend their entire career with one record label: all of their thirty-two singles and LPs were with United Artists.
