It's
hard to imagine singers whom we have come to recognize as the greatest
talents of their time ever struggling to get a start in the music
business, particularly such a versatile talent as Bobby Darin.
But, like many an aspiring singer and songwriter, Bobby paid his dues
at Decca and Atco before 'bursting' on the rock scene in 1958 with
"Splish Splash," following it up with "Queen of the
Hop" that same year. The following year, Bobby really hit
the big time with "Dream Lover" and "Mack the
Knife," instantly showcasing his ability to handle any style of
music.
In 1960, Bobby recorded Beyond the Sea. The melody
of that song comes from Charles Trenet's classic French song "La
Mer," with English lyrics written by songwriter, Jack
Lawrence. "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the
Sea" have stood the test of time as Bobby's trademarks songs.
